Refighting Mons, 23rd August 1914

Today is the 112th anniversary of the Battle of Mons, where the BEF first fought the German army in the Great War. For two days this week myself as GM and David Wasilewski as the Germans and Daniel Hodgson as the British refought the battle using the new All Hell Let Loose: Great War ruleset.

It was an epic battle on a 6ft by 8ft table with 18 turns completed. The Germans fielding 20 different formations of infantry, cavalry and guns against a veteran British force of 6 infantry battalions and 4 batteries of guns. We played for about 6 hours on the first day and about 4 on the second.

German troops assaulted across canal bridges and crossing points, arrived on the British flanks, forced the British back. They managed to isolate and envelope a couple of British battalions and threatened to outmanoeuvre and trap the remaining troops. It was a close run game. More details in the images.

Really big thanks to David and to Dan who was playing his first ever WW1 wargame.

If you’re interested in refighting the Great War with rules that allow for fast play, command dilemmas and cover the entire war on all fronts then why not pick up a copy of All Hell Let Loose: Great War? We have an early bird discount in place with Wargame Vault where it is now a Copper bestseller, just three weeks after launch. I’m also delighted to say you can now also pick up a copy from Caliver books.

If you want to see it in person or maybe even give it a go I’ll be running this battle as a participation game at The Other Partizan at Newark in October.

Keep those dice rolling.
